The five rings of the Olympic flag stand for the five continents (Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceana). It was designed in 1914 by Pierre de Coubertin and appeared for the first time during the 1920 Olympic games. At the same time the five rings stand for friendship of the participants.
By the way Pierre de Coubertin created the motto of the modern Olympic games. It was borrowed from Latin. Citius, Altius, Fortius (Swifter, Higher, Stronger).
